KIDS IN THE KITCHEN

The epidemic of childhood obesity is on the rise, just in South Western Sydney alone studies show that 40.3% of children aged 5-11 years old are overweight or obese (PANORG (Prevention Research Collaboration), Growing Healthy Kids in South West Sydney Baseline Prevalence Survey Draft Report, 2019), with access to healthy food and cooking skills being a key contributing factor.

“Kids in the kitchen” is a hands on cooking class to grow healthy bodies and minds. This program provides inspiration and knowledge for young children as early as the age of 3. Early intervention through training taste buds and establishing good eating habits, healthy eating and cooking skills is vital for children. If children are exposed to a variety of foods and what it does to their body from a young age they will go into adulthood with more positive behaviour, body image and habits. By learning about healthy foods and drinks, how to prepare foods and cook with foods, children will boost their confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they say “I made it myself”.

Decorati offers incursions at Early Learning Centres, Outside of school hours centres, and Primary Schools. We also offer workshops at private groups, shopping centres, markets and at events such as birthday parties. In our cooking workshops we bring all the supplies, materials and ingredients and handle the clean up.
Decorati works closely with the South Western Sydney Local Health to combat the childhood obesity statistics.
